Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MMM)
Who are they?
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry steers the policy on sustainable use of natural resources in Finland. Legislative work is carried out as part of the Finnish Government and the EU institutions and decision-making. The tasks of MMM include securing domestic food production and sustainable use of renewable natural resources and creating the preconditions for economic activities and well-being derived from these.
MMM employs 250 persons. Agencies and institutes working in the administrative sector under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry are Finnish Food Authority, The Natural Resources Institute Finland Luke, National Land Survey of Finland, Finnish Wildlife Agency, Finnish Agency for Forests, Finnish Forestry Centre, Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, and Forestry Development Centre Tapio.
MMM represents Finland in several international research forums. The Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) coordinates agricultural research across the EU. The Ministry also actively participates in the committees of the EU’s 8th Framework Programme for Research, Horizon 2020. MMM participates on Nordic research cooperation through the committees under Nordic Council of Ministers, such as Nordic Committee on Agricultural and Food Research (NJK) and Nordic Forest Research (SNS).
MMM has been involved in most of the ERA-NETs and initiatives in FP6, FP7 and H2020 related to agri-food (currently SUSFOOD2, CORE Organic Cofund, ICT-AGRI-FOOD, SusCrop, SusAn, FACCE Surplus, ERA-GAS, ForestValue). In addition, MMM is actively involved in the activities of the JPI on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE-JPI) and follows the activities of the JPI on “Water challenges for a changing world” and the JPI “A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life”.
The Ministry participates in the activities of international organisations focusing on research on agriculture and food supply in developing countries: The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the European Initiative on Agricultural Research for Development (EIARD).
How are they involved in SUSFOOD?
MMM has been involved in the ERA-NETs SUSFOOD and SUSFOOD 2. Projects funded are CEREAL, BIOPROT, SUSDIET (SUSFOOD 1st call), and SUSMEATPRO and OATPRO (SUSFOOD 2nd call) and AVARE and FUNBREW (SUSFOOD2, cofunded call). MMM participates also the ongoing confounded call with CORE Organic.
